Volunteer Edinburgh Awards 2023

June 11th, 2023

We’re delighted that our very own Gerry Waterston (Ger) attended the Volunteer Edinburgh ‘Inspiring Volunteer’ awards ceremony on the evening of 7th June at the City Chambers, to accept an individual volunteering award in the category of ‘Sports Volunteering’.  Presented by Robert Aldridge Rt. Hon. Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, the evening was a celebration of volunteers across Edinburgh.

Ger has been an absolute staple as our Finance Committee Spokesperson over the past few years and her contributions helped Auld Reekie come out of the pandemic in good enough shape to continue and grow and most importantly to get back on skates!

Well done Ger!!

What happens in a Taster Session?
Our experienced coaches will welcome you, and get you kitted up and ready to skate. We’ll run through some safety guidance and then it’s all fun and games as we teach you some roller skating basics, fun skills, and talk a LOT about how much we love playing roller derby!

If you love it, we’ll also send you more information about how to sign up for our next 6-week New Skater Programme.

Do I need to know how to skate?
Not at all! Our experienced coaches will show you the basics and keep you safe.

Do I need my own skates and safety equipment?
No – if you don’t have your own roller skates, we can lend you a pair. We can also provide you with elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards and a helmet if needed. The only safety equipment you’ll need to supply yourself is a mouthguard – these are necessary and must be fitted to your teeth before the Session.

What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable that you can move in. Most of our skaters practice in a t-shirt or vest top and leggings or shorts. Remember, you’ll wear knee pads and elbow pads on top, so avoid thick or bulky clothing.

What else should I bring?
Water, spare socks, and a mouthguard pre-moulded to fit your teeth. Sisu-brand mouthguards are favoured by most derby skaters but not the cheapest, so any mouthguard will do to start.
