Training session news!

November 16th, 2014

At the beginning of this month our intermediate and Rec skaters had the privilege of being coached by the amazing and world-renowned, captain of Team Scotland, our very own Crazylegs!

The focus for the session was on technical skills, including side surfing; a difficult to master but invaluable skill that takes a lot of practice! Skater LuPaul said:

‘Tonight’s practice with Crazylegs was an excellent mix of technical skills. A great opportunity for skaters to improve and practice for advanced minimum skills. Crazylegs is fab at breaking things down and it’s given us stuff we can work on while warming up at future training sessions, such as side surfing and transitioning. Personally, it’s given me the initiative to use my toe stops a little less as I rely on them too much and I want to improve my agility throughout my whole movement, and not just be dependent on what I’m comfortable with at present!

Side surfing in a big circle with other skaters was also helpful, and a lot of fun!’

Sounds like an excellent session. All ARRG skaters are coached by skaters from our All Stars team, most of whom have years of roller derby experience under their belt and many skate for the Scottish national team as well.

If you are interested in any of our coaches coming to your training session, email trainingandprogression@auldreekierollerderby.com or see here or, if you are interested in skating with us, get in touch with newskaters@auldreekierollerderby.com for details of our next intake.

InARRGuration game!

November 16th, 2014

We are excited to announce that the Auld Reekie Roller Girls Intraleague Home Season for 2015 is being held at a new time! As our loyal fans will know, for the past three years we have run our Home Season from January – April. However, 2014 has seen our league take on a lot of new directions as we continue to grow, not only in number but in standing in the roller derby world. In the past year, we have gone from being ranked #103 with WFTDA to being #60 in the world. That’s right, our wee Scottish team are the 60th best in the WORLD! We are super proud of what we have achieved. We plan to continue this until we are #1, so we’ve made some changes and moved some things around – and that includes our Home Season! So, exciting… we will now have our Home Season from September – November 2015! Keep a look out for dates which will be announced later next year.

ARRG Went to UKROC!

October 24th, 2014

As a relatively long established roller derby league, we have sent representatives to EROC for the last couple of years, and we’ve always found it incredibly useful, both in terms of networking and session information. It’s a lot of travel going out to Europe, but we have always felt it was well worth it. The only downside is that we can’t afford to send more than one or two league members. So, imagine our excitement when we were told about UKROC!
We were so lucky to have three of our league members involved in the event; Chasing Katy who is also a UKRDA secretary and worked on the PR and Marketing, Crazylegs who was a guest speaker, and Princess Die who assisted with the PR and Marketing. That meant we could send 5 people along! So we booked two weekend passes, hired a car and off we went.

It’s a pretty long drive from Edinburgh to Warwick, thankfully we had 5 iPods to provide an eclectic mix, and of course a stop at Tebay to refresh ourselves, but once we arrived at the facility, we were not disappointed. The university of Warwick seems to be like a little town; it is huge! We followed the directions we had been given and found a building plastered in UKROC signs. We had arrived.

We checked into the rooms to find them modern, very clean and well equipped. Compact, as you would expect from a university halls, but really absolutely ideal for a weekend conference event.

Of course, our first stop was the bar area. Most of the other organisers and guest speakers had already arrived since we got in fairly late (it really is quite a long drive!) but we were able to get some food and a nice glass of wine. We got our goodie bags – amazing! Tshirts for the organisers to wear all weekend, some awesome spray to keep our derby gear fresh and a wee rock that is engraved with the UKROC logo and a thank you. Not to mention our UKROC rock – amazing!

After chatting with everyone and feeling the excitement for the weekend growing, it was time to finish our wine and head to bed, ready for a super early start the next day.

We met in the reception and could feel the buzz in the air as delegates started to arrive.

It was so early in the morning, yet everyone was filled with excitement, a bit like the first day of school. Once everyone was registered, lanyard on and goodie bag given (oh and cups of tea and coffee, and cakes and biscuits in hand from the seemingly never-ending refreshment station), it was time for a welcome chat. Everyone gathered in the foyer area, eager eyed, whilst Mistress Malicious gave a chat on the weekend. It was time to get going!

The first sessions of the day were really varied. Because we had 5 of us there, we were able to attend almost every session which was so insightful for us. I went to a Social Media Smackdown session, run by Mr X of Rollin’ News, which was probably my favourite session of the weekend. Mother Mercy followed this with a talk on Video Marketing which was also incredibly interesting and I know there is loads I have already taken back and put into play for Auld Reekie. And I got to watch an amazing 3D promo video that the Expendables have made. Inspiring.

Skinn’er Alive attended an Officials on-skates training session run by Cherry Fury and Meg le Maniac – even though she is a skater and not a ref – and said it was excellent. She got a lot more out of it as a non-ref than we expected. Crazylegs attended Goal Setting and Mental Preparation, run by Kristen Lee (Kitty Decapitate), followed by Team Cohesion and Values, and LL Cool Gay went along to Safeguarding, run by Simon Kirkland from Sports Structures Ltd. All of us fed back that these sessions were just invaluable and so well run.

We then went for lunch – our first proper meal at the facility. It was amazing! There was so much choice, plus salads, loads of vegetables and even a dessert buffet. The staff were really friendly, and the quality of the food was much higher than anticipated for a mass catered buffet. It really was good.

So off we went for our afternoon sessions. This time, we had Skinner go to a WFTDA Rankings session run by Bloody Mary, followed by a Q&A, Die attended Teams and Team Conflict hosted by Bex Hewitt (one of the best speakers I saw all weekend), Gay went to a Referree training session by Xavier Bacon, Cherry Fury and Meg le Maniac, and it was Crazylegs turn to get her skates on and head over to the hall for a session on Technical Skills for Coaches, by Kristen Lee. Again, all of us really enjoyed the sessions and felt we gained a lot of knowledge.

After these sessions, there was a mixed scrimmage over in the hall, but we decided to forgo this in favour of heading to the gym. We met in the bar, and were discussing swimming or gym, when Bloody Mary joined us with a glass of wine. Decision made – wine time! As everyone filtered in from their sessions, dinner was starting so we all headed off for another amazing feast – this time with added wine. After dinner, it was back to the bar and networking commenced! It was actually amazing to just sit and chat to other people about how their leagues run, what issues they are having and just hear about the different things that people do. Being able to give advice as well as ask for it, is an invaluable commodity, and really the Saturday night networking was a really pivotal part of the weekend (it wasn’t just the wine drinking, honestly). We made friends, we swapped tshirts, and we got a real insight into both brand new leagues, and veteran leagues like us. And we stayed long after the barman went home.

The next morning, feeling a little worse for wear, we got up and went for breakfast. There was a real camaraderie this morning, with everyone feeling the effects of a late night but also excited and raring to go for day 2. We started off with Skinner attending a UKRDA face to face session with the directors, which apparently was incredibly useful and insightful. Gay went along to a Game Day Planning session, And Crazylegs held an on-skates session on Getting your Fresh Meat through Minimums along with Tinchy Slider from CCR.

Lunch again, and we were not disappointed. This time we did notice that everyone was mixing and socialising a lot more than before – looks like wine time worked! After lunch, we went to another set of sessions; Developing Successful Sponsorship Partnerships by Brock n Roller and Jelly Mean was attended by Gay, Crazylegs went to Tournament Organisation with mistress Malicious and Valkyrie, Stef attended the Junior Derby session with Judge Redd, and Die went to Bette Noir’s session on Herding Cats and Planning for Tomorrowland. All session were, once again excellent.

Sadly, the afternoon scrimmage was cancelled due to not enough participants (probably all that wine) but it didn’t matter – the weekend was amazing and we were all knackered. So much information, so much learning, so many notes… and we had a long way to go home (did I mention it was a really long way away?) so we were keen to set off. Mother Mercy did a lovely end speech, and all the organisers were thanked for their efforts and the delegates for coming. A lovely way to end.

The whole weekend was just so good. We will definitely be going back next year if it happens again, and hope that many more leagues come along too. The more leagues attend, the more we all learn and the more we can all be a part of growing roller derby in the UK.

We said our goodbyes and off we went, on that long journey back to Scotland…

Featured Skater: Pukeahontas #92

October 1st, 2014

This months featured skater is the amazing Pukeahontas! Puke works hard for ARRG, both as a skater and as our A team bench coach. She’s helped bring the Thistles to victory on many occasions, not least in the Big O tournament in America earlier this year.
She’s now back on skates and using her insane gameplay knowledge to become a real fighting force on track.

Home Team Affiliation: Bench coach for the Cherry Bombers

Joined ARRG in: Late 2010.

Favourite position to play: Looking super serious as the bench coach.

Your Derby story: Is a bit of a novel…. I started skating in 2010, and it took me a long time to pass minimums. Not long after I moved up to Rec Team I broke my ankle at training. I got back on skates 4 months later with a lot of amazing support from the Rec Team. Soon after I found it was all a bit much, whilst I was physically fine, I was struggling with the mental side of coming back from injury. I made the decision that I would be off-skates, and then the opportunity came up to bench coach for the Skatefast Club for Home Season 2013. I kept involved in the league with committee work and bench coaching, and was amazed to be voted in to bench coach for all of the Belles bouts in 2013. I was then voted in as perma-bench coach for the Thistles and moved to the Cherry Bombers in the Home Season shuffle. In the meantime I decided I wanted to give being on skates another try, and started from the beginning in our amazing Fresh Meat programme in January 2014. I’m now skating with the inters alongside my bench coaching.

Worst Derby injury: Breaking three bones in my right ankle. I have some metalwork and awesome scars, and will always have wonky calves.

Best Derby advice: Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Roller derby is a rollercoaster so prepare for the dips and embrace the highs. Exercise outside of derby.

Any funny/embarrassing derby stories? What happened at The Big O after party, stays at The Big O after party.

Derby Hero: Anyone that puts the time and dedication into improving their skills and helping to run a league.

What do you do outside of derby: Sell welding supplies, take photos of my dogs with stuff on their heads, drink gin (then regret that at the gym the next day).

Fun fact about you: I have a fear of backwards rolls.

Lilo & Stitches went to Antwerp – Coaching One Love Roller Dolls!

September 25th, 2014

Our coaches in ARRG don’t just coach us, they also travel the world, guest coaching other teams.

We love visiting other teams and giving them some of our ARRG tips and tactics, and it seems they love having us! When our Belgian born Lilo & Stitches was asked to visit her home country, she jumped at the chance. Here’s what she said about her trip:

“When we got the email from Antwerp Roller Derby (One Love Roller Dolls) asking me to come and coach them, I was super excited. I was born in Belgium and never really get the chance to go back, so I was very excited to meet and skate with some real life Belgians!

I knew that OLRD were a good team already, in the top 25 in Europe by Flat Track Stats and one of the top leagues in Belgium, so I wanted to make sure that the sessions planned would be tailored specifically to what they needed to work on. They had a big tournament coming up (Skates of Glory – the annual Benelux derby tournament – http://skatesofglory.com/)

After seeing the footage, and speaking to the trainers, we decided to have a section on blocking skills with a lead in to some scrimmage, an off skates session on ‘Mentally preparing for a tough game’, and a session on jammer skills.

Each section focused on small changes that could make their already existing skills more efficient and help fine tune everything in preparation for Skates of Glory.

All in the sessions spanned 5 hours and by the end of the day my voice was almost gone!

OLRD were incredibly friendly and receptive and it was a total blast to go and coach them. I’d do it again any time!”

Sounds like she had a great time! Our top coaches are available for coaching at your league too, have a look here for more information!

School of ARRG Knocks 3 – Was it even ARRGer?

September 4th, 2014
Coaches Caitlin and DeeDee getting ready to warm up, Fame style!

It’s 8am on a Saturday morning. Team Bootcamp and ARRG coaches arrive at Meadowbank looking like human versions of Buckaroo carrying skatebags, water, soundsystems, lunches, shirts, inner tubes.. everything you might need for a full day of skatey hardwork and fun! A busy hour later and the tracks are ready, everyone is registered and Head Teacher Die signals to the excited pupils that we are ready for School of ARRG Knocks 3 to begin!

Begin boldly we did – a Fame inspired assembly complete with 80’s aerobics moves, high kicks, high hands and high cut leotards set to Michael Sembello’s Maniac and Irene Cara’s Fame certainly got everyone’s hearts pumping ready for the day ahead!

The day ran fast with each group having 3 on skates and a classroom session covering blocking, jamming, jumping, technical skills, tactical skills and loads of goal setting and off skates. You could see the concentration on faces as pupils really challenged themselves to learn new skills and push themselves further than they thought they could with proud coaches looking on.

Head Teacher Die told us that, “It was amazing to see how much people progressed throughout the sessions and great to see their skills in action when it got to our end of day scrimmage. I love bootcamp day, everyone works so hard!”

We asked Lady Scrapnell, who passed her mins (for the second time(!), after having a baby boy) in January 2013, what she thought of the day’s proceedings:

Scraps, what did you think of the day?
The day was great fun, informative, well-organised and gloriously arrg work!

What sticks out / what were your best bits?
A certain fame-inspired outfit certainly sticks out… I also really enjoyed having some classroom time to talk about goal setting – something that I’ve never had the discipline to sit down and do for myself; it was fantastic to be given building blocks and techniques for the non-skating aspect of roller derby. It was great to end the day with a scrimmage, despite feeling like there was no energy left – we all found some!

What did you learn?
New technical skills – like quicker ways to leap back onto the track after being knocked out and skating on my tripods, the importance of off-skates, mental work: setting goals, celebrating achievements and welcoming positivity into your game! This was only the second time I’d scrimmaged with skaters outside my league and I loved the challenge and excitement of skating with players I’d just met that day.

What would you say to people thinking of attending a bootcamp?
Go for it! You’ll make loads of new skater pals, be taught by encouraging, friendly, top-class coaches and remain stiff and sore for the rest of the week with the lyrics, “I wanna skate forever” echoing around your head!

It was a really well-run day and I’m so glad I came!

Photos by Scott Carroll; to see more click the image.

There was great feedback from pupils saying their thanks on Facebook and Twitter. From what everyone is saying it was a cracking, fun day and like the title suggests – ARRGer than ever!

Thanks to everyone who came, helped, coached and organised. See you at the next School of ARRG Knocks – From everyone at ARRG SOAK Bootcamps.

ARRG coaches are available for bootcamps and coaching across the world – visit out coaches pg for more information.

Featured Skater: Double D’struction #34

July 1st, 2014

Our featured skater for July is Double D’struction!

A long standing ARRG member, DD skates for both the Cannon Belles and the Twisted Thistles. She is also on multiple committees, AND coaches! She is a busy lady. DD can often be found coaching fresh meat – if you are interested in joining ARRG, email newskaters@auldreekierollerderby.com for details of the next session – and who knows, DD could be coaching YOU!

Home Team Affiliation: Skatefast Club <3

Joined ARRG in: 2011. I went off to Canada for 6 months in 2012 / 13 to snowboard but missed ARRG too much so I came back!!

Favourite position to play: Depends on the day..

Best ARRG memory: There are so many!! But, the whole Big O experience was definitely something I will never forget and will treasure for the rest of my life. It was was sooo amazing to play with my teamies in America. Everyone played so hard and it was a phenomenal thing to be a part of. We learnt so much, had the chance to take on teams ranked much higher than us, and win, and we got watch some of the best teams in the world play derby! I loved watching Attack take on team America whilst we waived signs and chanted random chants and loved it when we ran outside to sell the last of our t-shirts by shouting and standing on tables outside the venue! Brilliant! The whole thing was great fun from start to finish – soo many awesome memories!

The Big O was not just about all that though for me. It’s my best ARRG memory because ARRG and The Big O got me through the toughest year of my life and without it I really don’t know what I would have done.

My partner Jonathan died suddenly in June last year. I was utterly devastated. Playing at The Big O was the goal that kept me moving when all I wanted was to lie down. It made me get up at 5.30 to lift weights with Cider instead of sleeping on cold dark winter mornings. It made me go to pilates on a Monday night to sort out my flexibility and derby lopsidedness. It made me walk through driving rain to do Olympic lifts on a Thursday night with Cider and Queenie. It made me go to every practice and try my best to focus on drills or scrim – even when I was knackered at 9.30 on a Friday night after all the gym, practice and a long week of work! It helped make sure that I ate well to try and put on the weight I’d lost so quickly and stopped me drinking all the pints / wine / vodka I would have if I hadn’t needed to train. It even made me go to committee and team meetings, do my committee work and helped give me something to get up and be strong for. It even made me (and loads of other ARRGies) get up on a Saturday morning to pack bags in Tesco to fundraise! The love and support from everyone at ARRG has been massive and unrelenting. Having a goal and not wanting to let everyone in ARRG down pushed me on. I’ll never forget that!! I can’t thank ARRG enough – you are all awesome!

Worst Derby injury: I’ve been really lucky and managed to only lose both toenails twice.

Best Derby advice: Always come to practice and work hard when you are there. No matter what is happening in your life, or how bad a day you’ve had.. practice always makes it better. And.. no matter what.. you can always depend on your derby pals to get you through those tough times!

Any funny/embarrassing derby stories? I constantly cry when someone has a proud moment. There have been too many incidents of me crying when someone tries hard then does something amazing for my liking. It’s not a great trait to have when you are trying to coach people!

Derby Hero: Anyone who tries really hard!

What do you do outside of derby: Derby, committees, coaching, off-skates and watching derby takes up a lot of time! Apart from that – I live with Caketin – we hang out and do stuff most people would find weird. I go to the gym with Cider to lift heavy things 3 mornings and an evening a week – at first people looked at us funny but now we get lots of “good morning”s and nods of approval for being in the weights area. I try and hang out with none derby pals as much as I can and try my best not to bore them with derby chat. I walk in the hills and swim in the sea lots. I like to go to interesting places far away and travel about. I love snowboarding and skiing. erm.. I’m pretty active really and try to say yes to most things people ask me to do.. I don’t watch TV. I don’t sleep much!!

Fun facts about you: Er… I have a woollen goods fetish.. I hate wet lolly-pop sticks or wooden chippy forks (can not touch them!). I listen to (bad) music constantly, whenever I am not listening to it something is playing in my head it’s really annoying! Are they “fun facts”? I’m not sure.
