League Check in

Post by carla » Tue Apr 28, 2020 2:45 pm

Hi folks
Hope all are well
Just checkin in with y'all and making sure everyone is able to have a voice throughout the Covid19 lockdown period. Speaking personally I am finding it hard to juggle everything all the time and sometimes just do naff all and try to reset, I have found doing Adrienes 30 day yoga has really helped me strangely as I never really thought anything like that would but I really look forward to it 🙂 Fortunately I am at home and not working so I am able to spend time with the kids and try to home school them 🤯
Everyone is in such different circumstances and we all appreciate everything that everyone does especially all the folks working for our emergency services and frontline employees.

We hope people are able to join in our weekly league training zoom sessions which have been fantastic and it's been lovely to see everyones faces.

We also wanted to share the link again to our league support ideas and hope folks find it useful and please continue to share your ideas.

Please get in touch if anyone needs any extra support or if you have any ideas that have helped you and you think others would appreciate.
The SFA have put a great wee document together that Stef shared on another part of the forum and we thought we'd share with you here too 🙂

(Too long; didn't read at the end!)

I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I feel very disconnected from the league at the moment, and as someone who mainly joined the league to make and see friends this is very sad for me. It seems like the travel teams have good social links that they're maintaining (as far as I know, whatsapp groups etc.), there are various non-ARRD-but-ARRD-adjacent private group chats here and there, and there's the fb group. I know we're all learning as we go along and dealing with lots of new pressures in our lives, so this is all very understandable. Now that we've been in this situation for a few weeks, any gaps might be more apparent than they were at the start.

I'm a rec skater, and there are non-rostered comp skaters, injured or otherwise unable to skate/exercise skaters, officials, and non-skating members. They're all part of our league community and I wonder if any other people feel like they have fallen through the gaps at the moment. Maybe not, but I definitely feel like this. I know the Sunday sessions would help, and they sound great, but I'm personally struggling to feel confident enough to join these when I feel so disconnected to the league the rest of the time. (Obviously this is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy and is partly down to me, but still that's where I'm at.) Then there are people who are not skaters or people who can't do these sessions for one reason or another. The fb group is another good social option, but some people don't use fb at all or are minimising their use of it just now for mental health reasons. (I'm not 100% sure where Protostars fit in with all this but they seem like another group that might be tricky to keep in the loop.)

None of this is a criticism - it sounds like everyone's trying really hard to keep things going and are doing a great job in a new and difficult environment - I've just been reflecting on what might be missing in reaching all parts of the league community just now. I wonder if some low intensity social events that are open to the whole league might help with this. By low intensity I mean doing something chilled out together rather than only talking, not too long, having the option to lurk or stick to text chat (video chatting is tiring!), and not trying to talk in a big group at once - so basically what the Sunday sessions are like but with a purely social purpose.

Some ideas I've been thinking of are things like doing a pub quiz over voice chat, playing easy online games (e.g. there's a pictionary-type one that is really easy to use), and watching a film together. The kind of things that some of you are probably doing with your friends or within teams, but for ARRD socialising. Would be nice to have something regular, maybe fortnightly. People could join without having to actively take part if they felt like it, rather than committing to an hour of video chatting. Perhaps occasional "pub" sessions with video chatting for those with the social energy for that, but run separately to any other sessions - joining a chat when everyone else has been hanging out for an hour already can feel intimidating. If anyone else has any other ideas, I'd love to hear about them.

I know we're all figuring out how life works right now and some people might not feel like joining in with any of these kinds of things, which is obviously fine too. But it might be nice to have some social opportunities that are open to the whole league to help us feel connected as a community and to make sure people don't feel left out. I also don't really know what group this would fall to (do we need a temporary social team??) but I'm sure we could figure that out.

TL;DR: I personally feel very socially disconnected from the league right now and this is possibly the case for some other groups of league members too. I wonder if having some regular social events (which are relaxed, low pressure, and aren't too long - like the current Sunday sessions but for socialising) that are open to the whole league might help sustain the league as a community by covering those gaps in support and connection.

Idk, maybe it's just me! :/ I'd be really interested to hear other people's thoughts, experiences and ideas about this :)

I know quizzes are all the rage right now but i think a league wide quiz night could be great! Run it just like any quiz night we've had in the past but over zoom and use the breakout rooms so that we can still have small teams rather than answering on your own. Means the teams of people can still use that time to hang out while answering the questions but we can still all come back together for the questions and answers! A good way to see everyone in the league while catching up with a few folk - just like any social night we've had in the past. :msnparty:

A social crew to organise non training stuff would be ace!
We did an All Stars online scavenger hunt too which was fun! Could do a giant one with teams using the breakout rooms maybe?

Yeah, both of those sound fun! Zoom's breakout room function would be really useful for these kinds of things.

Really anything regular that is open to everyone and not linked to any specific group would be nice, it wouldn't always have to be a big event, though it would be fun to do that too sometimes. I'm not sure how many people would actually join in, but just having something available to join in with in theory would be helpful for keeping the league feeling like a league.

Maybe something like having a fortnightly time slot that was for a social thing, and it could be any of these types of activities. I realise it's not as straightforward for a larger group of people and also people's diaries aren't so empty anymore etc. etc., but I still think this is really important.

The other thing I wondered about was rather than adding in a whole new set of events, just making sure that everyone was included in a regular hangout meeting outside the Sunday ones. I don't really know how much need there is for this. As far as I have picked up from hearing people discuss them here and there, each of the travel teams and also protostars have weekly hangouts. I know that all inters can join the astros meetings, though perhaps there is another way to include non-rostered and rec skaters at the moment rather than joining another group's meeting. From my perspective as a rec skater, that's the thing that's missing, and it makes me wonder about which other league members might be left out at the moment.

I don't really know what the solution is, which is why I suggested that social events might help. But if a majority of the league are already attending some kind of weekly social thing, I wonder if it might be easier to try to expand that somehow (though I realise that team stuff is a priority of its own) rather than add in a whole new thing that there isn't a massive need for. And then maybe there could be less frequent but bigger all-league social events so that the league doesn't end up being too disjointed. Not sure what would be best (who knows anything these days?!), just putting thoughts out there.
